Culture crossroads

A rich sense of place

The location of Croatian Dream is truly unique, for nowhere else in the world will you find three civilizations and cultures — Christian, Muslim and Orthodox Christian — coexist so closely, on merely twenty kilometres of land, as they have coexisted for centuries, leaving their mark on the region. The Roman city of Narona used to lie outside today’s Metković, where archaeologists recently discovered sixteen Roman statues, among them a statue of the Roman Emperor Augustus. Počitelj near Čapljina offers a jewel of Turkish architecture, an ancient fortress; while further toward the coast lies Gabela, a town situated on the river Neretva claimed by many expert archaeologists and historians to be the mythical Troy.

A late Roman villa, one of the most exquisite edifices in the entire Bosnia-Herzegovina, lies in Mongorjel near Čapljina, while the nearby Hutovo Blato reservation - a true oasis in the midst of the arid land of central Herzegovina is home to countless birds, fish, wild game, boars and wild horses. Not far away from the Croatian Dream location lies the old city of Mostar, as well as the Kravica waterfall near Ljubuško and the Vjetrenica cave with more than six kilometres of underground tunnels. Other beautiful natural locations near the Croatian Dream include the Baćinska Lakes near the town of Ploče, as well as the isle of Korčula, one of the most important historical places on the Croatian Adriatic, probably best known as one of several locations claiming to be the birthplace of explorer and adventurer Marco Polo.
